The traditional username and password are the most common security tools. Although this combination may have worked well in the past, it shows severe flaws by becoming a primary target for cyberattacks. A Denial of Service or dictionary-style attack can easily compromise and hijack usernames and passwords.
Organizations ask their employees to create long and complicated passwords due to the increasing frequency of these types of attacks. However, employees write their passwords on workstation monitors because they are so hard to remember.
To combat this and the other security flaws that passwords present, Biometric Technology has been enlisted to replace them entirely. Fingerprint identification and iris identification are the two most used modalities in this regard. Within one second, the employee can be logged into their workstation with a single finger or iris scan swipe.
The following are some of the key strategic benefits of using a biometrics-based SSO over a typical password: –
- In comparison to the minutes, it takes to log into a network with a password, an individual can log into a network in as little as two seconds.
- Unlike a password, an individual’s unique physiological or behavioral aspects cannot be stolen or hijacked.
- Physical access entry
- Giving an employee of a business or corporation access to a secure building, or even a safe office within it, is referred to as physical access entry. Keys and badges have traditionally been used. The main issue is that these tools can be easily hacked, lost, duplicated, or even given to other employees who are not supposed to be in those secure areas.
Law enforcement
Biometric technology is also being used by law enforcement agencies at all levels of the federal government to verify the identity of suspects and wanted felons. Fingerprint Recognition has typically been the most widely used modality. Only by taking the suspect’s fingerprint and running it through a massive database known as the “Automated Fingerprint Identification System,” or “AFIS,” for short, can the suspect be genuinely identified. Iris, facial, and even vein pattern recognition is all making inroads into this market, but they are being used as a substitute for Fingerprint Recognition.
An Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System has been introduced to upgrade the current AFIS processes.

- The fingerprint images (and other metadata) of more than 55 million accused persons and criminals are now digitally connected to law enforcement agencies
- In less than 24 hours, the results of criminal searches can be sent to the requesting law enforcement agency.
- IAFIS databases also store latent fingerprint images that are gathered from a scene of the crime.
- On-demand, highly digitized criminal photographs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days (about 12 months) a year.
- Remote access to the IAFIS databases is also possible.
Surveillance
Surveillance is simply keeping track of a large group of people and comparing their behavior to a predetermined baseline. The main reason for this is that this technology can be hidden inside CCTV cameras to identify any known criminals or accused positively.
Five current surveillance techniques can be used now:
- Overt Surveillance: -The public and businesses and corporations are aware that they are being watched whether directly or indirectly. The main goal of this type of Surveillance is to deter and prevent criminal activity in public places.
- Covert Surveillance: – Individuals and organizations have no idea that they are being watched or recorded in any way. This is the area where Face Recognition is most widely used.
- Tracking individuals on a watch list: – The main goal is to locate an individual whose identity has been confirmed but whose whereabouts are unknown. The so-called terror watch lists that are used at major international airports around the world are an excellent example of this.
- Individuals are being monitored for suspicious behavior: – The aim is to question people whose behavior is erratic, abnormal, or entirely out of the ordinary. Because the goal is to filter out the undesirable behavior of an unknown individual, or even a group of people, this is considered a macro type of Surveillance.
- Tracking people for suspicious kinds of activities: – The CCTV camera (in combination with Face Recognition technology) is looking for suspicious behavior among an individual or a group of people. The CCTV camera will capture video of the questionable behavior in this way, and the Face Recognition system will then be able to identify the person(s) in question.
